History
Hear Central was started in 1993 as Hearing Resource Services by Tom Jones. Tom started losing his hearing at 12 years of age and it became progressively worse. At the age of 20, he dropped out of college, unable to understand the instructors, and began wearing hearing aids. At the age of 47, Tom had a profound hearing loss and was unable to communicate effectively with people outside of his family. In 1989, at the age of 49, Tom became part of a study on Cochlear Implants and was implanted in December of that year. He was fitted with a processor in January 1990 and by early spring was hearing wonderful sounds he had not heard in over 20 years. Tom had gone from having 3% of his hearing to around 70%.
Tom was so excited about being able to hear that he started trying new things to help him hear in different settings using assistive listening devices. In the fall of 1992, Tom was sitting in church at First Methodist Church of Cordele, Georgia using a hearing assistance receiver, when he heard a sermon for the first time in over 20 years. As tears came to his eyes, he knew what he needed to do.
In January 1993, Tom started Hearing Resource Services and worked with churches to install hearing assistance systems so that people could hear the word of God that so many were missing. In 1995, he opened an office in Albany, Georgia and expanded his product line to include hearing aids, amplified telephones, alarm clocks, and other devices to "help people hear".
Tom passed away from a long fight with cancer in the fall of 1997, but his memory lives on in the people who are able to hear better, because of his dedication to educate and provide hearing assistance to anyone who wants to hear.
Today, Tom's son Danny Jones runs Hear Central. Danny is committed to continuing his father's mission to help others hear. With Hear Central's presence on the Internet, hearing-impaired people around the world have the chance to share in the miracle of "hearing wonderful sounds".
